A specific example of urban consolidation in Sydney is the apartments to be built at 128 Herring Road, Macquarie Park. This is the construction of 550 units in 5, 9 story high apartment buildings in the area of about 1000 metres square. This is an example of urban consolidation as it is the high density of people placement in such a small area. As it will allow occupancy for around 700 people it is much more than the usual amount of flat houses which could fit onto that land.
Urban Sprawl within Sydney are evident all over the Sydney basin especially the Penrith area which surrounds the new neighbourhood of Jordan Springs. It is located in the western area of Sydney.This is an example of urban sprawl as it is the dramatic expansion of the urban areas out from the CBD to less populated areas and areas which have potential for expansion and development. Jordan Springs is a great example as it is currently undeveloped and has great potential to become a bustling vibrant area away from the city.
2. There are many involved parties within the the development of the apartments in Macquarie Park. The involved parties are Lipman (Owners of land), Ryde Council, NSW government , Urbis (Builders). There are many parties involved with the development of such a large expansion. 3. Ryde council has great interest in this development as it will help provide accommodation to the ever growing high-technology area of Macquarie Park. By providing more accommodation it will lure more and more business people to be attracted to the Macquarie Park. It will provide a well needed boost to the economy from the increased consumer spending from an extra 700 residents. The council would like to promote how into the future this modern society and area really is.The owner of the site is interested in this development as it will provide a well needed boost to the housing market in an already struggling area in terms of housing availability. They are also interested as it will suit the skyline of the area filled with medium sized office buildings up to the height of 12 stories and building a development like this helps the aesthetics and over all quality of the area.
4. There are many responses to the development and construction of such a large expansion. Many residents are protesting that the buildings will be too large and will overshadow the sunshine filled road. They also say the dramatic increase in the number of people living there will increase the already terrible traffic in and around the area. Many architects say that the buildings lack asthetically features and do not look overall very nice along the street. It has been said that by the looks of the plan it will stand out from anything else in the area due to the lack of aesthetics and quality planning on the impact of the area. But there are many businesses, shopping centres and university which are overally happy with this large development. This is because it will be a boost of profit from increased people in the area. These issues have not been properly assessed as the plans are only fairly new (about 2 months old) and is still in the planning phase.
5. The effectiveness of the responses are pretty good as they can change the final outcome of the project very dramatically. In this case of the construction of 5 apartment buildings to the height of 11 stories this is an enormous development which takes lots of time and consideration. The effectiveness of nearby residents protesting against the project is very effective as the builder will listen and acknowledge what the community wants and needs from third development such as traffic, aesthetics, etc. It allows the project to fit the needs of a broad and wide range of people, organisations and authorities.
