Define the following terms and include an example of each and explain how your example relates the word:
Aesthetics : The way something looks and is perceived in society. The Sydney Opera House is an example of aesthetics as it was taken into thought of the surroundings and how the society looks at the structure. It also takes into consideration how the looks of the building impacts the surroundings, the structures uses and the society.
Safety : The quality of averting or not causing injury, danger, or loss. The safety signs relate to safety as they notify people on where they should take care and use precautionary chances to keep themselves safe. It shows people what dangers are lurking around.
Slums : Slums are a heavily populated, run-down, squalid part of a city often inhabited by poor people. The photo of the slums refer as it shows how poor people have to live in society and how it can greatly depreciate the value of a certain city.
Decay : Decaying is the decline in excellence in a certain object or place. It is the process which a city or part of it falls into a state of disrepair and neglect. This pictures show how if places or objects are not taken care of or are ageing rapidly that the actual value of the thing/place looses it appreciation in society and becomes an unneeded thing. This allows people to not care about and start to destroy it in the terms of vandalism.
Reconstruction and Renewal : The process of redeveloping no longer functional urban areas. Urban renewal can greatly increase the value of a city and can also make the feel of the city so much better. Most of the time crime rates go down because of the areas being redeveloped for different uses and to become more lively and take into consideration the modern times as such in the photo.
Transport : Transport is the mode of moving, carrying or conveying things or people from one place to another. Transport has to be adapted to its surroundings especially in cramped city areas where land is limited. This is why a lot of transport is being placed underground which does not use much of above ground space. It allows the infrastructure to be in place but to still function without interrupting the city above. Transport is very important to a society as it allows life to be easier for everyone.
Suburbanisation : The Establishment of residential communities on the outskirts of a city. It shows that people are more willing to live further out from the city than before. People from rural communities were starting to make their way to the city settling in the outskirts of cities as well as others in the city who wanted a less stressful life.
Environmental factors : The environmental factors are the factors in which that urban planning and development need to address to find out the impacts the environment will have on the society. Many environmental factors such as the river in the picture show how the society has to deal with the limitation and how to work around it such as building bridges across it.
Light and Sound : Light and sound are much concerns when it comes to urban planning and development. When light pollution occurs the night sky is barely visible due to the amount of artificial light. Sound pollution is also bad as the amount of noise coming from transport, people and machinery can be tremendous and can impact a lot on the lives of the society around. These overall effect the aspects of urban planning and development as these are very major concerns to be taken into consideration about just like the photo below is so badly effected by light pollution.
