Go Back to Where You Came From: Reflection

  • What is your initial reaction to the show?
My initial reaction to the show is that it gave a good insight into the perspectives and stories of refugees/ asylum seekers. The contestants on the show also had their views changed quite a lot by the shocks and suprising facts and adventures in which they were faced with in the cases of asylum seekers in different places around the world. It was also very confronting with the stages of refugees go through in such places such as Africa and the Middle East. Raquel was very racist at the beggining but I feel she was dramatically changed by the end just like Raye. This really changed the views of many people as they don't know what really goes on with refugees and asylum seekers.
  • What percentage of immigrants are refugees?
1.5% of immigrants are refugees.
  • Why does such a small number of people make for such a big deal both politically and in the media? (Give your opinion)
Australia is not very used to getting very many refugees and this makes it seem like there are so many refugees coming to Australia. Many Australians don't like the fact that many refugees are coming to Australia as they feel that they could overrun the country or do bad things to the society.
  • Where does Australia rank among countries accepting refugees?
Australia ranks 18th among countries that accept refugees.
  • To what extent do we have an obligation to help other people suffering in the world? (your opinion)
I think we should help other people suffering in the world as long as they stay in their own country and try to make the suffering there stop. I don't feel that bringing suffering people to Australia is very good as we have to take care of them after they have settled here. We need to help suffering people as impact on the world economy and at some extent on Australia.
  • How much extra support do refugees receive in comparison to other Australian citizens?
Refugees recieve the same amount of extra support in comparison to other Australian citizens?
  • How many Asian nations have signed the UN Refugee Convention?
11 Asian nations have signed the UN Refugee Convention.
  • Why is it important to note that Malaysia has not signed the UN Refugee Convention? What does this mean for refugees in Malaysia?
It is important that Malaysia has not signed the Un Refugee Convention as Malaysia is one of the countries with the highest intake of refugees. This means that refugees in Malaysia do not get treated well there and suffer considerably with such things as whipping.
